From the Inventor of EDs:

After moving to southern California almost twenty years ago, I became personally aware of, and extremely concerned about, wildfires. Wildfires are as destructive as tornadoes and hurricanes. Each year, one million acres of land is burned in the continental United States. In 2007, almost two hundred thousand acres burned in southern California alone. Over five hundred thousand people were displaced from their homes. Over fifteen hundred buildings were burned and many people were injured, some died. Once burned, land takes a long time to grow vegetation that animals use for food and cover from predators. The land becomes vulnerable to erosion from wind and water.

I am concerned about the loss of property and the effects of wildfires on human and animal communities. I investigated why many so homes, especially ones with stucco exteriors and cement tile roofs, burned. It turned out, small bits of burning material called embers or fire brands get carried along with, or blown miles ahead of, a fire.

My background in construction and engineering helped me understand that eave vents make homes vulnerable to embers. Eave vents perform the function of ventilating your attic space to control temperature and moisture. Whether square or groups of large round holes, these vents only have a mesh screen with quarter inch openings for protection against birds and rodents. The screen does nothing to stop fire, embers or wind-driven rain or snow from entering eave vents.  Nor does it minimize the intrusion of smoke during a fire. Water, and sand driven by wind, blows into these vents and collapses drywall ceilings while the water causes mold growth and leaks into walls and ceilings.

I experimented with different materials and shapes to come up with EDs - Ember Deflector System™ .  EDs is made from stainless steel which is rust-resistant and has a melting point over 2,750 degrees F. The product’s simple design allows it to be closed manually in a few minutes on a single story home. Multi story homes can be serviced using our cable and pulley system or our fully electronic model.

Protecting your family, your home and your belongings requires a layered defense against fire. Maintain a clear perimeter around your home. If fire is coming, and you have time, bring flammable items inside. And prior to a fire or high velocity wind and rain from damaging your home, install EDs - Ember Deflector System™ to protect your home.
